FIELD NOTES

How to layer perfume without overdoing it

Start with two products. Notice what changes. Build from there.

Choose your anchor

Start with a perfume you already enjoy. Name the part you want to bring forward: the vanilla, a rose detail, the musk, or the woody finish. That gives every other product a job.

Add one supporting product

A body lotion or wash is a manageable first layer. A matching note is one starting point; a contrasting note is an experiment. Our recommendations explain which direction you are taking.

Try the combination before a full routine

Follow each product’s directions. Try new products separately first, then test a small combination. Notice the opening and how it smells later. A pairing you enjoy on paper may feel different when worn.

Leave room for the perfume

You do not need a scented wash, oil, lotion, mist and second perfume. Unscented body care is a useful option when you want your fragrance to stay the focus.

Keep categories in their place

Laundry detergent and room spray are not perfume. Use products only for their intended purpose and follow fabric-care and product labels.
